We left Gaylord this morning and made our way to Mackinac City.  From there we went over the Mackinac Bridge, and on up to Sault St. Marie in the Upper Peninsula.  We are staying at the Soo camp ground, about a mile from the Soo Locks

July 7-9, 2012 Gaylord visit

We stopped over for a couple days in Gaylord on our way to Saute St. Marie in the upper peninsula.  We had an awesome time visiting my Aunt Wanda, Uncle Dan and cousin Denise.  I just want to say my Aunt Wanda is an awesome cook and fed us every meal we ate while we were here. They have a beautiful home and showed us a great time while we were here. It was nice to catch up and go through some old family albums.

8 July, 2012 Review of Gaylord, Mich. KOA

We camped here for two nights while visiting family in the area. The campground was very well kept and the staff was very nice and helpful.  They have full hook-ups available including reliable wi-fi and cable TV. The laundry and washrooms were clean and updated.  The campground is convenient to I-75 and local shopping.  This campground would be a nice place for a week visit or a nice over night place to camp while traveling to the upper peninsula. I would rate it a 8 out of 10, only because there are no paved roads in the park.

6 July,2012 Standish Michigan

We arrived in Standish Michigan this afternoon.  We will be here for a couple days before we head up to visit my Aunt in Gaylord.  It’s been in the mid 90’s this week.  There were a couple days when it was hotter in Michigan than it was in Miami.  We took a drive out to Lake Huron, and snapped a few pictures.  Geri says it’s like the ocean with no surf or tides.

5 July, 2005 Last day at Haas Lake, New Hudson

I spent the last day in the Detroit area going down memory lane. The town I grew up in has changed quite a bit. The old shacks around Walled Lake have been mostly torn down, and replaced with large half million dollar homes.  My high school is still there and virtually unchanged, but our sister high school has been enlarged and remodeled.  The county has also built a third high school in our area.

I drove past the old Wixom Ford plant where my father worked for31 years.  It’s been closed now for more than 20 years.  I remember riding past the plant as a child, and being amazed at all the cars parked in the huge lot. This plant produced the Lincoln and Thunderbird lines.  It’s sad to see the plant now quiet, with grass growing up through the cracks in the parking lot.

This morning we woke to a little excitement.  The wind and rain had kicked up across the lake at about 4:30, and was rocking the Wildcat pretty good. It was a fast moving storm and was out of the area pretty quickly.  I had planned on rolling out of New Hudson around 8am, but we ended up over sleeping.  I stuck my head out of the camper around 7:30 to survey the storms damage. I immediately noticed a huge black plume of smoke coming from the back of the camp ground.  I grabbed the camera and went to check it out.  By then the fire trucks were speeding through the campground.  I took these pictures of a park model that had caught on fire.  The rumor going around was their AC unit had caught the house on fire.  Everyone got out and no one was hurt.
